Mom has Cancer

17 June, 2009 (15:01) | General | By: Talon

My mom has been in the hospital since Sunday, she’s not able to eat or drink anything for serveral weeks.  She has Lymphoma in her stomach that is stopping digestion.  She’s gotta start chemo pretty quick her due to the severity of not being able to eat or drink anything.  She’s getting everything via IV right now and will have to until the Cancer is eliminated.

Last few months

have been very busy.  I spent a week in denver on a business trip retro fitting the data center there.  Working, getting a lot of stuff done around the house and out in the yard.  I’m getting  ready to buy a house in a bit, its time to talk to a real estate agent in the coming weeks as I have the funds to purchase a forclosed house or if I wait till the end of the year or so I can put down 10% on a min 5 bedroom, 2 bath 2k sq ft house.  My job is going smoothly and I’ll be having several more trips out of state this year (1 to SF, Cali for VMworld09, probably 1 more to denver later this year to finish up the retrofit and install a ton of more equipment).

My hosting business hasnt hardly gotten of the ground, simply because I dont have time to manage it or look for clients.  Right now I’m not focusing on it at all, I have a few VM’s hosting stuff but thats about it, its bringing in no money right now.

My oldest Uncle passed away suddently last week, heart valve gave out with no warning.  The memorial is today so that shall be interesting, seeing people I havent seen since I was a kid.

One of my good friends from highschool stopped by the other day, we chatted for a few hours, I’m glad i took the route I did, with not doing much college and jumping right into IT and doing as well as I am.  Simply because a lot of graduates from my HS class are going to have a hard time finding a job right now in their fields due to the economy.  When Co-workers and I get frustrated at work, we just have to stand back and be glad we have a job still in the economy :)

Hired

25 April, 2009 (07:26) | General | By: Talon

I finally have been hired on full time with a company, no more contract work….  I work for World Technology (http://wts.com) as a Intermediate Systems Technician.

I also got my server box online, ready to go and got a pricing scheme setup.  I also got 1 client on board already.  I’m going to spend some time now creating a website (and possibly changing the name) and finish up the necessary things I need to get the ball rolling

Online

I’m online on my new server box, websites and TS been moved over.  Now its time to put together a business plan and pricing breakout for VM hosting.

Server ready to go

9 February, 2009 (20:27) | General | By: Talon

So I will be racking my box in Spokane WA with abba communications at the end of february.  Then its time to start seeking clients wanting a Virtual Machine shell.  I’ve already decided I will be doing unmanaged hosting (let the clients decide OS type/version, install it and configure/admin it the way they want).

New server

3 January, 2009 (10:40) | General | By: Talon

I jumped on a good deal from dell this week.  If you configured a server with $2600 or more before adding it to the cart, it took $750 off the top instantly.  I was able to get the following server for $2200 after shipping and tax and an additional $1200 from newegg to buy the 16GB (4×4GB) ram and 2 Fitjusu 300GB 15k SAS drives.

Dell 1950 III 1u server
dual 2.5ghz E5420 Quad cores with 12MB caches each, 1333fsb, 80 watt
16GB PC5300 667mhz FB ECC Ram (4 slots free to be able to push it to 32 or 48GB)
Dual 670w hot swappable power supplies
Dual hot swappable 300GB 15k 3.5″ SAS, 16MB cache
PERC6i dedicated PCIE-8x array controller with 256MB accelerator cache with Battery backup
DRAC5 remote access card
Rail kit with cable management arm
3 Year warranty and NBD hardware response
Will be running VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 3

Should be here mid Jan and I’ll get it racked in Feb with fishcomputers in Dallas Colocation 1/3 rack we’re renting.

My new job has been going really good.  I am still on contract but should be going full time hire very soon.  I’m thier only linux guy right now so I’m being looked to, to do anything with linux until they can hire a linux engineer.  Even after they hire a linux engineer its still going to be a lot of work on my end because I’ll be the tech implimenting everything and get first crack at troubleshooting issues before escalating to the engineer.  I’ll also have to train the rest of the team I work with on linux and I imagine at least for a while I’ll be on 24/7 call if a linux system has an issue until the rest of the team is up to speed on the OS.

Busy times

16 November, 2008 (18:47) | General | By: Talon

I havent posted in a few months.  I’ve been really busy with a ton of stuff.  Left my job at microsoft, I was there 10 months and a senior tech, pulling at least 50 hr weeks avg a week ( in a 4 day work day).

Went to Apple Cyder Press in Cashmere WA youth rally in October.  It was a blast.

I went to the eye doctor and didnt realize how bad my vision was, so I got glasses now.

I started my new job at World Technology Solutions (WTS) as a Tier 3 windows support technician.  We’re getting ready to impliment large scale VMware with SAN mesh and oracle on linux systems which makes me the linux guru and expert on the team.  Good possibility I may assume the role of Linux administrator.

I fired my AR-15 a few times at the range and its sweet, very accurate and fun to take people shooting.

Unfortunately Obama was elected president…. this country is going downhill fast, corruption, greed, imorality and whatever else.  We know from historical times and the bible, that times like this have come and gone, during bibilcal times it was 10 times worse that it is now, and every time the nations collapsed and started over.  We’re in for some scary times with Obama/Democrates having majority.

AR-15

30 September, 2008 (19:03) | General | By: Talon

I picked up a AR-15 today.  A Rock River Arms entry tactical model.  With a quad rail, surefire G2 mount, EoTech Holo Sight and tactical handle with deployable bipod.  Its a .223 rem AR-15 with a 1/9 twist and foldable front sight.

I must say the EoTech is really cool but it was pricy.  I’ll go to the rifle range next weekend and shoot it.  Here are some Pics:
